This week, we learned about the importance of typography when designing maps. Typography simply refers to the overall readability of a map. Typography includes font size, color, typeface, label orientation, and line spacing. I learned so many new techniques to beautify a map! Of all the new concepts that I learned this week, I enjoyed utilizing the halo effect for labels the most! In the map below, I used the halo effect behind the "County Seat" and "Capital City" labels to ensure that the label was easier to read.
I learned different ways to map labels for point features as well as water features. I utilized an additional labeling technique utilizing "Annotations". The "Annotation" technique allows the map designer to have full creative control over the labeling process for that selected layer.Overall, I enjoyed this module more than any other portion of the GIS program to date!
