GIS 5007 - Module 7 - Google Earth

For our final module, we worked in Google Earth to create a population density map of South Florida. The map also included various surface water features to include lakes/ponds, marshes, and streams. We utilized some functionalities from ArcGIS Pro, not currently available in Google Earth, for the Surface Water data and legend.

Here is a screenshot of the Population Density Map:

For the second part of the project, we created and recorded a Google Earth tour of various locations in South Florida.  Although I've worked with Google Earth for other personal projects, I had never recorded a tour for various placemarks.  I discovered pretty quickly that I needed as much available RAM (read only memory) as possible to ensure my computer did not lock up while recording the video.  After I shut down all unnecessary programs, I was able to complete the video tour without additional issues.

When creating the placemarks, I observed the 3D models of various buildings when zooming in, specifically within the Downtown Tampa area.  I was unaware that these 3D models in Google Earth were created with LIDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) data.  According to the US Geological Survey (USGS) (click here), LIDAR "is a technology used to create high-resolution models of ground elevation with a vertical accuracy of 10 centimeters (4 inches)."

Both the population density map and the video tour were saved to separate .kmz files and submitted as Module 7 deliverables.
