This week, we were introduced to
XY Coordinates and Geocoding. As an
experienced Microsoft Excel nerd, I was happy to work with data tables and swiftly
clean up address data for the Geocoding project. I moved through the XY portion
of this lab very quickly, due to my MS Excel expertise. I have a long way to go before I attain the
same type of confidence in my skills with ArcGIS! I know that with much more practice it will
all become much easier.
In terms of this week’s lab, I
struggled with “the smaller things”, such as figuring out how to do a hollow
outline for the Manatee layer. I search for guidance through all the typical
sources (online forums, ArcGIS Help, etc).
As a result, I do not think my map looks as it should. I imagine it should
just have an outline of the entire county, rather than all the other
lines. (Note: I currently have a message in our class help
forum asking for guidance. I hope to get
it resolved before the deadline Thursday. I have an unpredictable work
schedule, so I am posting what I have now if I cannot correct that before the
deadline.)
Otherwise, I moved through all the
other steps easily. Working in Google Earth
and ArcGIS correcting the unmatched addresses was self-explanatory and took an
acceptable amount of time for me to complete it.
I’m enjoying this class so far! I
simply need more practice so that I can be as proficient in ArcGIS as I dream
to be!
